Vijayadashami | Dussehra Celebrations Across Different Regions In India

by Saashi Oberoi 22 Sep 2025
Dussehra Celebration

Vijayadashami or Dussehra is one of the most auspicious occasions in the Hindu religion, as it celebrates victory of good over evil. This day celebrates the conquerence of Lord Ram over Ravan, and victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura, leaving behind a message of dharma (code of conduct for following one’s duty and nature), divinity and the path of truth.

Till today, Dussehra holds a strong significance in the Hindu culture, and is considered an auspicious occasion for new beginnings, be it in profession, education or spiritual sadhana.

For Dussehra 2025, mark the date as 2nd October, and Dashami Tithi starting from 1st October 3:16 pm and ending on 2nd October at 4:26 pm. This is your clock to initiate new beginnings and celebrate Dussehra in your regional culture. In fact, these cultures vary across different places.

Regional Celebrations of Dussehra

India’s cultural diversity shines terrifically across the Indian map. While the core message of good triumphing over evil remains the same, every region adds its traditions, rituals, and festive spirit to the holy festival.

North India

In states like Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, Dussehra is synonymous with Ramlila performances and the burning of Ravan’s effigy. Individual community grounds are light up with fireworks as families gather to witness the symbolic destruction of evil. Many streets or towns also host fairs (melas), where local artisans, food stalls, and cultural performances attract large crowds to celebrate together.

The Role of Ramlila During Dussehra

One of the most iconic traditions during Dussehra in North India is the Ramlila, a theatrical performance that depicts scenes from the Ramayana. Local communities create stage plays where actors bring the story of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshman, and Ravan to life. They even create a series of performances for several days, concluding with Ravan’s defeat on Dussehra night. These plays are not only entertaining but also a way to pass on cultural values and stories to younger generations along with an essence of entertainment.

West Bengal & East India

In Bengal and East India, Dussehra coincides with the grand Durga Puja celebrations, which doubles up the excitement. Magnificent pandals (temporary shrines) showcase artistic idols of Goddess Durga, and entire streets are decorated for this. On the final day, known as Vijaya Dashami, idols are taken in processions and immersed in rivers, signifying the goddess’s return to her heavenly abode. Families also exchange sweets and heartfelt greetings, celebrating the spirit of victory and togetherness.

South India

Dussehra Fair

In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, Dussehra is celebrated as part of the 10 days of Navratri traditions. The highlight of this celebration is the Ayudha Puja, where people worship their tools, instruments, vehicles, and even books, showing gratitude to the objects that sustain their livelihood. Homes are decorated with Golu (arrangements of dolls), and cultural programs such as music and dance performances are organized. For them, it’s a day to be thankful to every little thing that helped them to survive.

Mysore, Karnataka

The Mysore Dussehra is one of the most spectacular celebrations in India, with origins tracing back to the 15th century. The Mysore Palace is illuminated with thousands of lights, and makes it a royal procession. A golden idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari is carried on a decorated elephant through the city. This is carried on with traditional music, folk dances, and cultural parades make this festival an international attraction.

Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, Dussehra is marked by the symbolic exchange of Apta leaves, also called “gold leaves,” as a gesture of goodwill and prosperity. People worship the Shami tree, believed to bring blessings of wealth and protection. Families also consider the day auspicious for starting new ventures, purchasing vehicles, or making investments.

Gujarat

Navratri and Dussehra is what Gujarat is known for. Dussehra comes after nine nights of energetic Garba and Dandiya Raas performed during Navratri. In fact, garba lovers from across the nation travel to Gujarat, because it is worth it. The festival concludes with prayers to Goddess Durga and large community gatherings. In some towns, symbolic effigy burning of Ravan also takes place, blending traditions from the north with Gujarat’s unique cultural flair.

Each region adds a distinctive color to the festival, but the essence of Dussehra remains constant. The festival of celebrating the victory of truth, righteousness, and community spirit remains unchanged across India.
